Some generic products are better than brand names

While it may be tempting to purchase generic items versus brand name items, you should first be certain that you are really getting as good a bargain as you think. There are some brand name products that are better than substitutes when it comes to cost savings.

Here are some substitutes that may not be as good as brand names:

  • Paper goods - If you are a fan of Bounty paper towels, chances are you are not going to be happy with a substitute.  Before you make the decision to purchase the substitute, you should understand that if you are using twice as many "generic" paper towels, chances are you are not saving money.  The same holds true for facial tissue and toilet tissue. If you need two times as much of the product to accomplish the end result, you would have to realize a savings of 50% to make it worth purchasing the lower priced product.
  • Trash Bags - If you purchase a generic trash bag brand and the bags hold less without breaking, you are going to ultimately spend more money on them.  This is an instance where purchasing a name brand bag may be more cost effective in the long run than a substitute.
  • Batteries - We use batteries for remote controls in our home, for smoke and fire detectors and for some of us, in our mouse or keyboards.  While it may be tempting to not invest in the higher priced batteries, you could wind up spending more money on batteries if you use a non-brand name.  In general, many generic brands of batteries do not have as long a life as their branded counterparts. This means that you will have to replace them more often.
Here are some substitutes that can be as good as brand names:

  • Cereal - In some cases, you may find that generically branded cereals are not only more cost effective than branded cereals, but they sometimes have less sugar and preservatives.  Often, you will find these substitutes packaged in bags instead of boxes which cuts down on manufacturing costs.
  • Detergents - Laundry detergent and dish soap can be a good buy as a substitute if you watch what you are purchasing. Check the labels carefully for laundry detergent to be used in a load to ensure that you do not have to use twice as much to clean your clothing.
  • Office supplies - paper, pens and paper clips do not have to cost you an arm and a leg. Pick these items up at your local discount store for significant cost savings.

There are a number of instances where brand name products are better that substitutes. Savvy shoppers will know their product lines and make sure that before they purchase a substitute, that they are getting the best possible option for their dollar.
